Over the past few years more and more candidates in the Scottish Construction Industry have taken advantage of favourable market conditions to work on a freelance basis.

From 2005 to early 2009 temporary workers operating in the Scottish Construction Industry took advantage of healthy and profitable market conditions to work on a freelance basis. The attractions to work freelance were strong hourly rates, long term contracts and excellent prospects for continuity of work for the majority of freelance disciplines.

Unfortunately the current downturn has adversely affected the freelance market as more and more Companies struggle to hold onto their own full time staff. In addition rates have decreased dramatically with those freelance candidates still in work earning around 30% less than 24 months ago.

The Graph below shows how overall salaries have come down in the past 18 months for freelance Site Engineers & Agents. Whilst we are seeing some areas of the market remain relatively buoyant (e.g. Aberdeen) rates are generally lower and in line with supply outweighing demand.
