We’ve worked with the ICE Graduates & Students Committee for over three years now. Each year we’ve taken part in seminars aimed at giving Civil Engineering Students the tools they need to take their first steps into employment.

Previous seminars have focused on CV building and Interview Techniques. At the end of each session, we’d offer to critique CVs, only to be impressed by the quality of what they’d produced. Online CV guide/building tools have definitely made it easier to put a good quality CV together.
This left me wondering; what other advice/guidance could we offer these students?

So this year I adapted our approach. My presentation was titled, ﾑEverything You Need to Know About Getting a Job in Civil Engineeringﾅ but Were Afraid to Ask’. On top of discussing CV building, we covered:
- How to take a pro-active approach to that all-important first industry job search.
- The merits of working with a design consultancy versus a contractor.
- The state of the current market and our predictions on future trends.
These themes feature in our day to day conversations with the students and graduates. The aim of the seminar was to impart as much useful information as possible, to help the students to think about a realistic career plan. The feedback from the event was positive and we look forward to next year’s seminar.
