We are seeing a continued demand for experienced Senior Quantity Surveyors with Cost Consultancies across the central belt, however there is a definite shortage of good quality candidates available and willing to move from their present employer. Therefore, clients have got to offer something special to tempt candidates away – with type of projects and salary/benefits helping them make their decision. Candidates are attracted to the number of major projects occurring across the central belt – St James Centre in Edinburgh and Glasgow School of Art to name a few!! Salaries are starting to increase too on the consultancy side, however this still doesn’t match those on the contracting side, but some may say a better work/life balance is more achievable with consultancies.
Candidate attraction has changed over the years with fewer candidates responding to adverts and frequently a more targeted approach is required to find that star unicorn!!
Generally, the recruitment process within the consultancy sector is slower than it was before, with companies holding out for that ideal candidate that ticks all the boxes and in some case, deciding not to recruit. With that said, they are being a little more flexible at graduate/assistant level – the number of Quantity Surveyors graduating from University is decreasing and clients are starting to be a little more open to considering non-cognitive candidates and are even pro-actively putting them through a QS degree part-time while training them on the job, allowing them to achieve the practical experience while gaining the full qualification.
