“Reviewing the past quarter, we have seen movement and extra need for site management staffing within the section as we have enjoyed the benefits of extended hours on sites with the great Scottish weather, resulting in site works ramping up. Both the wind farm and electrical sectors of the market continue to be very busy and very understaffed owing to the number of suitably qualified candidates available. There is still a lot of interest in the sector for a candidate perspective, particularly with the medium-large scale projects that can offer a longevity and diversity in the positions available.

Clients need to be aware of the difficulty in securing workers with required authorisations to bring onto projects. We are seeing more occasions whereby clients are better to bring on a strong engineer who they can put through the relevant qualifications to bring onto site as opposed to waiting to locate a candidate who is able to start with qualifications already in place. Candidate availability, particularly in the electrical sector, is very low and so other methods of staffing must be considered.

This summer also brought the development and installation of the largest solar farm in Scotland, recently been completed in Perth, an interesting project that may lead to further projects utilising this method of renewable energy. On the wind farm sector, the offshore wind farm market continues to be busy with one notable project based in East Anglia which is expected to be completed on site by 2018. Large scale projects continue to take precedence in the sector and as such smaller developers in each division of the energy market now need to look at offers put to candidates in order to draw them from long term work”
