To celebrate Women in Engineering Day we contacted Jennifer W. to ask her about her current position and what it means to her being a woman in engineering. We were curious to find out what first got her interested in the engineering sector and how Contract Scotland has helped her find the most suitable position. At the end Jennifer offers a piece of advice for women who are considering a career in engineering industry.
For a woman in engineering there are a range of opportunities for personal and career development. Engineering is a platform where a variety of projects can set challenges where skills such as problem-solving can grow. Daily interactions with different people help build business relationships and new connections, which are made through networking, open more doors for women to explore opportunities within the industry. Lastly, the engineering sector can be financially rewarding compared to others.
The reason why I decided to pursue a career in engineering is that I have an inquisitive mind and I like to know how structures are built. I am mostly interested in cost management, so by being a QS I am exposed to all aspects of a projects life cycle.
Contract Scotland helped me by enhancing my employability and made me feel that they had my best interests at heart.
My advice for women considering a career in engineering is go for it! Do not be put off by the fact that is mainly a male dominated industry. It has been proven that the gender balance is changing. So be yourself, be confident, determined and have a good team work ethic. Lastly, approach engineering with a positive attitude and work hard.
