“Reviewing the past quarter, we have seen movement and extra need for site management staffing within the section as we have enjoyed the benefits of extended hours on sites with the great Scottish weather, resulting in site works ramping up. The electrical sector of the market also continues to be very busy and extremely understaffed owing to the small number of suitably qualified candidates holding relevant authorisations for site works. This has resulted in clients now looking to bring in engineers with a strong civils background they can train and develop to obtain these high voltage authorisations.
This summer also brought the development and installation of the largest solar farm in Scotland, recently been completed in Perth, an interesting project that may lead to further projects utilising this method of renewable energy. On the wind farm sector, the offshore wind farm market continues to be busy with one notable project based in East Anglia which is expected to be completed on site by 2018.
The feed-in tariff and energy bill changes both continue to hover over the industry, with companies looking at the commercial viability of projects after the next 18 months. There’s still opportunity in the sector, although clients are required to review costs & margins in these projects, which will undoubtedly have an effect on the market rates paid to temporary workers in the future. Hydro projects in Scotland have been slow to develop in comparison with other renewable options where developers have been looking at options but financial reward and feasibility continue to hinder this area of the division”
