“The M&E building services industry is in the healthiest spot from a contracting standpoint and has been since 2014. Most of the major players in the market report an increase in turnover, as well as implementing growth strategies within the Central Belt in particular. We’re beginning to see the rise and growth of the businesses who focus on the D&B and mid-sized project sphere (up to £3/4mil in M&E value) and the increase in these type of project opportunities are giving contractors the chance to implement growth plans. An interesting trend is that more and more M&E Contractors are seeking out project and contract opportunities to gain direct client work to drive profitability and their operational capabilities.
That means we’re starting to see an ever-increasing demand for both mechanical and electrical project management/engineering roles, in both the east and the west. But over the next two or three years, we’ll start to see a shift in the demand in Edinburgh due to public sector development. We anticipate the next three to six months will continue to see a demand for project management and most likely estimating staff, as contractors look to increase their capabilities to tender for more projects and drive both turnover and profitability.
Skill shortages for mechanical and electrical continue to be a cause for concern, and this will only continue to worsen. We suggest that businesses look at apprentices and fresh graduates to meet the demand in workload and to combat an ever-increasing management shortage.”
